On 30 April 2025, MEP Niels Fuglsang submitted a parliamentary question (E-001722/2025) to the European Commission concerning the use of non-human primates in animal testing.
In 2022, there were 7,658 recorded uses of non-human primates, a 9% increase from 2021, with France (4,147 uses) and Germany (2,204 uses) as the largest users. Notably, France, Germany, and Denmark, reported the use of baboons—73 uses in France (up 83% since 2021), and 5 uses each in Germany and Denmark. France also used vervet monkeys (51 uses) marking a 1,600% increase since 2021.
MEP Fuglsang requests clarification on the measures the Commission is taking to encourage Member States to reduce and replace non-human primate testing. He further asks why these primate species continue to be used and what is being done to push France, Germany, and Denmark toward permanently phasing out such testing.
