JRC launches review of models and methods used in cardiovascular research

Contribute to this initiative by submitting your application by 14 November 2025.

The JRC’s EU Reference Laboratory for alternatives to animal testing (EURL ECVAM), in collaboration with the Directorate for Environment, launched a review of models and methods used in cardiovascular research, aiming to improve research outcomes in cardiovascular research and promote non-animal approaches.

Among these, computational modelling & simulation has a prominent role in cardiovascular research, hence the relevance of the engagement of the in silico medicine community in this effort.

Objectives of the review include:

  • Assisting researchers in finding and using non-animal approaches to address scientific questions and aims in cardiovascular research;
  • Improving the human relevance and health/clinical outcomes of scientific results;
  • Reducing the number of animals used in cardiovascular research and their suffering where scientific evidence is lacking to support their use;
  • Supporting researchers and project evaluators in complying with legal requirements associated with using animals for scientific purposes;
  • Increasing knowledge sharing and encouraging more cross-disciplinary collaboration among stakeholders in the cardiovascular research community.

The review will be supported by a sub-group of the EURL ECVAM Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC). The JRC is looking for experts to join this group who have in-depth knowledge of one or more fields of cardiovascular research, significant experience with applying models and methods in research studies, and a well-established profile supported by peer-reviewed publications in reputable scientific journals. If you would like to contribute with your expertise in computational modelling in cardiovascular research, you can submit your application by 14 November 2025.

The JRC is also gathering scientific evidence to inform the review, calling on researchers and stakeholders knowledgeable in the field to submit relevant information. This could include, for example, scholarly reviews on the state of non-animal models and methods in cardiovascular research, successful or unsuccessful cases of development, application and translation of specific research approaches, and examples of reduction or replacement of animals with alternative methods in particular research contexts. Eligible materials include peer-reviewed journal articles and scientific publications, conference proceedings and presentations, project reports and summaries, case studies and technical assessments. You can contribute with your research outputs by 31 December 2025.
