webinar for Members of the European Parliament

The Avicenna Alliance hosted a Members of European Parliament (MEP) webinar on 7th October to talk about what in silico medicine is and why it matters. Our Director Prof Liesbet Geris gave a great presentation and answered all the outstanding questions. The goal of the webinar was to increase MEP understanding of in silico medicine.

On the 7th of October 2021, Prof Liesbet Geris (Research Professor in Biomechanics and Computational Tissue Engineering at the Universities of Liège & Leuven (Belgium) and executive director of the Virtual Physiological Human Institute) gave a brief informational presentation to Members of European Parliament (MEP) about computer modelling and simulation (CM&S).

The event was hosted by the office of MEP Tilly Metz (Greens, LU). During her 15-minute presentation, Prof Geris provided an overview of CM&S, describing both what it is and its current relevance to EU health policy. She incorporated Avicenna Alliance examples of in silico innovations and highlighted the impact CM&S standards and regulations could have on the medical field and healthcare.

With four MEP offices in attendance, the webinar then shifted to a question and answer, including questions regarding the usage of in silico during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as what current main priorities are for in silico research and regulation.

The goal of the webinar was to increase MEP understanding of in silico medicine. The Alliance believes this was successfully achieved, and is excited to continue further expanding our network of policymakers aware of and interested in the potential of in silico medicine through additional future initiatives.
