Informal Meeting of Ministers of Health (6-7 September)

At the event, the Presidency of the Council, EU Health Ministers, high-level EU officials as well as representatives from Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland gathered to discuss a series of issues related to EU health policies. Particular emphasis has been put on oncology and the fight against cancer.

The priorities as highlighted by EU health ministers chart the path forward that will be taken by the Czech Presidency over the next months. The Czech Presidency began in July and extends to 31 December 2022.
While the meeting emphasized cancer, in previous hearings held with the parliamentary committees, Czech Health Minister Vlastimil Válek and Industry and Trade Minister Jozef Síkela stressed that the Presidency will strive to progress both on Council’s position regarding the European Health Data Space (EHDS) and on a common position on the Artificial Intelligence Act. These policies, which are actively in development, pose interest and engagement opportunities for the in silico medicine community.

Key highlights

  • The representatives focused on the availability of cancer care, early screening, and the centralisation of specialised centres across Europe.
  • In this context, the Czech Presidency will, as expected, launch a discussion on the Council Recommendation on Cancer Screening, which is one of its priority proposals.
