National Supercomputer Centre in Guangzhou (NSCC-GZ) was established in November 2013 as a strategic initiative of Guangzhou Metropolitan Government, Guangdong Provincial Government, and jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Sun Yat-Sen University. NSCC-GZ is the biggest science and technology facility of Guangdong and the No.1 science and technology project of Guangzhou, aiming at developing a supercomputer with peak performance over 100 petaflop/sec within the national 12th 5-year plan period with the total investment over US$ 420M. Its Tianhe-2 (WilkyWay-2) supercomputer has been ranked as the world fastest supercomputer on the TOP500 ranking list, four times successively, since June 2013 (

NSCC-GZ is located in a dedicated building of more than 42000 m2 floor area at the Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou Higher Education Mega-centre. We have recently secured a joint funding over 400M Yuan (about US$ 68M) for frontier research in the next five years on Big Data Science and HPC Applications from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Guangdong Provincial Government and Guangzhou Metropolitan Government. The missions of NSCC-GZ are: 1) to facilitate interdisciplinary research and original innovation; 2) to accelerate industrial transformation toward high-end sector with added value and to substantially increase the competitiveness of China industries; 3) to attract HPC talents and to develop a future HPC-skilled workforce; 4) to provide high throughput and high security information service and cloud computing platform for construction of smart city; 5) to explore a self-sustainable and market-orientated route for development of a world-class supercomputer centre.

Job Title: Team Leader or Software Architect in HPC applications and Big Data Analytics

Job Type: Initially five year full time contract and renewable

Start Date: ASAP

Annual Salary: a competitive salary based on experience and performance starting from 600,000 Yuan (about US$ 96,700) plus free housing and other benefits.

  • The position is available immediately till to be filled for outstanding and ambitious computational scientists in large scale simulation of complex living systems and advanced materials. A successful candidate should have a PhD or equivalent in computational science and engineering (physics, materials, life sciences and engineering etc.). In-depth knowledge in relevant disciplines, programming skills in computational biology and bioinformatics domains, or soft matter and bioengineering for extra-large scale parallel computing are essential. You should be capable of working under your own initiative and with a multidisciplinary research team, of presenting your work to our industrial partners and at international conferences, so excellent communicational and organizational skills are also required. Other personal specifications are
  • Demonstrated experience in research team building and leadership in computational biology or soft matter and bioengineering with at least 20 years experience.
  • Excellent track record in attracting research incomes.
  • Strong record of peer-reviewed journal publication and/or extensive industrial experience in HPC applications and/or big data analytics.
  • Expertise in the use of various programming languages used in scientific high performance computing and/or big data analytics.
  • Demonstrable experience in performance tuning on Petascale systems with heterogeneous architecture (e.g. Intel Xeon Phi environments).
  • Use initiative and creativity to identify areas for research, develop new research methods and extend the research portfolio.
  • Excellent time management skills.
