(Bicentenary) Integrating ophthalmic imaging, multi-omics, and deep learning for cardiovascular and neurological health insights.
The University of Manchester Division of Evolution, Infection and Genomic Sciences

The eye is the only part of the body where the nerves and blood vessels can be directly evaluated using simple cameras and non-invasive light-based scanners. The appearance of the structures of the eye (e.g. veins, arteries and nerves) is known to be closely related to the health of the brain and the cardiovascular system.

In this PhD, you will investigate how eye scans (including colour fundus photographs and optical coherence tomography (OCT) images) can be used to assess health and disease risk in relation to the cardiovascular and central nervous systems. You will work with a range of datasets including a large, local dataset of 3 million ophthalmic images, as well as data from biobank studies.
