Securing research funding is one of the most important –and often most challenging– tasks for early career researchers. In this panel discussion, experienced ESB members who have obtained competitive grants, including ERC funding, will share practical advice, common pitfalls, and insider tips to help you navigate the world of grant writing. Whether you are preparing your first application or looking to sharpen your strategy, this session will offer valuable insights to boost your chances of success.

For this panel discussion, we are pleased to welcome the following panel members:

Prof. Liesbet Geris (KU Leuven & University of Liège, Belgium; VPH institute) focuses on multiscale modeling of biological processes, particularly in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, and has extensive experience with interdisciplinary projects. She has received three prestigious ERC grants (Starting in 2011 and Consolidator in 2017 and 2023) to fund her work. Prof. Geris is the executive director of the Virtual Physiological Human Institute, advocating for the use of in silico modeling in healthcare.

Prof. Hanna Isaksson (Lund University, Sweden) specializes in musculoskeletal tissue biomechanics and mechanobiology, with a particular focus on bone and tendon biomechanics. Her research explores the relationships between structure, composition, and mechanical function of musculoskeletal tissues, with applications in bone fracture healing, osteoarthritis, and tendon repair. Prof. Isaksson received an ERC Consolidator Grant in 2020 and served the ESB as a council member from 2012 to 2018, including as ESB vice president.

Prof. Ralph Müller (ETH Zürich, Switzerland) is internationally acclaimed for his research in bone biomechanics and musculoskeletal tissue regeneration. His work leverages advanced biomechanical testing, simulation techniques, and bioimaging strategies. Prof. Müller has a robust portfolio of high-impact publications and numerous awards, including the ESB Huiskes Medal for Biomechanics (2019). He was awarded an ERC Advanced Grant in 2017. Prof. Müller served the ESB as a council member from 2002 to 2010, including as ESB president.

The webinar will last 60 minutes in total. For a smoother flow, we encourage you to send your questions in advance to laura.lafuentegracia@kuleuven.be. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions during the session, but those submitted by email will be given priority.
